xx Found - Buccaneer XN981
« Thread started on: Aug 25th, 2009, 3:46pm »

Just had a quick conversation with Francis (Plazz), who is ecstatic about finally nailing the truth behind XN981 at Errol.

He informs me that it is pretty much a complete aircraft, and not just a Fuselage or Nose Section, I am sure that Francis will upload a couple of images in due course, and a more in depth report on his findings.

Well done Francis.

XN981 has indeed been found! And what a find to!

I was told before entering the premises that I would be disappointed with what I’d see. The reality couldn’t have been further from the truth. Shocked and thrilled more like because when the door opened, standing there in front of me was the ultimate Buccaneer Airfix kit!!

Its all there, wings, tail plane, nose cone, airbrakes, engine nacelles etc. The whole dam lot is just waiting to be reassembled in to another complete Buccaneer!

Unfortunately, the biggest issue is that the port wing has been cut off for transportation using a Stihl saw, but who cares? where there a will there’s a way and I’m sure someone out there would have the skill and know how to put it back together (any takers)?

Anyway enough of my babbling, on with the photos…

I took loads more photos but I just wished that I’d taken my SLR instead of my pocket camera!

Sadly, there are no plans to re-assemble this ‘Airfix’ kit and probably never will be, at least not by the current owner anyway. However, we must all be grateful that 981 has survived all of these years undercover, sitting quietly out of harms way and gradually collecting dust in the hope that one day somebody may have the means to bring her back to display condition.

Many thanks go to Mike and Peter for making this brilliant visit possible.

Francis

I wonder how many Buccaneer fondlers have drooled all over their keyboards with this post? She does look in good shape but sad news about that wing being cutoff/ I wonder why this was done as there looks to be loads of room in the building?

From Francis original post...(Unfortunately, the biggest issue is that the port wing has been cut off for transportation using a Stihl saw, but who cares? where there a will there’s a way and I’m sure someone out there would have the skill and know how to put it back together (any takers)?) grin grin

Looking at the pic,s i would say that the Rear Spar,Front Spar and the Auxilliary spar could be welded back together fairly easily.

Yes of course you can use them Damien. Please just credit it/them to Francis Wallace/The Blackburn Buccaneer Society as you have done so with the others.

Do you want to take them from here, or do you want me to email you some higher resolution samples?

Also, if you are interested, I visited both XX892 and XT280 again this week if so please let me know if you want some updated photos of them for your site?

Cheers, Francis

Well done Plazz, great Photos. There is a good pic of XN981 in Tim Laming's book page 138.

Are there any more lost Buccs to find?
