Well after spending quite a bit of time on the spare tailplane fairing, I have decided to take most of the paint back to the metal, the Primer would not take to the old paint and started to flake up, so its back to square one and beyond!! rolleyes

Being offline has not stop the restoration of XX889.

The spare tail fairing refinish is now complete, see images below.

In third and final top coat.

Onto the aircraft itself, all the hydraulic pipework has been reconnected to the airbrake and tailskid units.

Tailskid pipework reconnected.

Electrics are by far the biggest single issue with the aircraft, the photo below shows the port radio bay fuse panel and the removed fuses in the bag in the top of the image.

Another important job has been to remove all traces of lagging/insulation from the aircraft, this material has proven to harbour corrosion and I have seeked advice from many restorers, all have said the same thing, remove it.

Here the Die-Letric Panel has been dropped down and the insulation removed.

My thanks as ever go out to Anthony & Dan, who's dedication to this project seems to have no boundaries.

Hmm Insulation plus water equals corrosion. A dirty job to remove it all put it will pay off in the long run! With every update she is looking better and better each day! Hats off to you chaps! wink

The team were in attendance today and had to endure blizzard conditions, according to reports we obtained from one of the RAF Stations within the area, the Wind was supposed to be around 21mph, if what we witnessed today was 21mph, then my 1.4 Astra is capable of 350mph!!!! shocked

As you can gather, we achieved very little today, Anthony and his son continued sorting through the nightmare in the cockpit, Dan continued with the Radio Bay access door removal and I dropped the last of fuses from the 200v electrical system and tested each fuse from the forward accessories bay and found them all to be working order.

Due to the aforementioned weather, it was impossible to take any photos this time around.

Blimey Nige, if the weather was that bad Iím glad I couldnít make it over to Kemble on Saturday!
You have to remember that any wind speed is always multiplied by three when your stood/working out on an airfield grin
Iíll see you over there in a few weeks time!

Absolutely, many years of working outside on Airfield's has taught me not to trust any Met Office wind speed predictions. wink

With the impending arrival of our newest addition to the family, work on 889 will slow for the next few weeks, but I have had the chance to start preparing some of the Floor Panels for repaint.

This shot shows the cleaned panel at the top and an uncleaned panel at the bottom.

The above cleaned panel after applying one coat of Grey Etch to it, I am not happy with the dent so will be sorting that out.

If this panel will look that good when it is all done, imagine what the cockpit will look like?
Any hints as to what the meaning is behind the squadron stickers??

All the refinished panels so far have been of a very high standard, so in theory, the floor panels should be just as good.

Now for the squadron crests, these are the templates for our 50th Anniversary markings, we aim to have these applied by the end of April.

As I am now awaiting a delivery of Etch Primer, I have turned my attention to one of our spare main wheel units.

This unit, which is the same one that relinquished its main bearings last year after a fight, is being readied for a trip to A.C Shotblasting in Newbury, A.C are going to shotblast and powder coat it ready for repainting, once this has been done, it will be shod with a New tyre and be built up to replace our troublesome Port unit which has a slow puncture.

Just the one pic for now.

Rims split.

A quick heads up for you, the team will be in attendance at Kemble on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th April, when we aim to finally get her washed down and prepared for the mounting of the 50th Anniversary markings.

If you fancy visiting us, then please either contact me via Private Message or by Email.

Tomorrow (20th), will see an influx of chaps to start hitting some of the work required before the Airday.
Chris, Tim, Stuart, Dan, Anthony, Keith & Myself are gearing up to sort out various tasks, most of which are centred around her general condition.

Today was a bit of a washout, Stuart started a repair to the strike sight and gave it a general clean up at the same time.
Dan continued with the headache of trying to replace the damaged Radio Bay access door.
All I could muster today was a wash down of the port nose area, prepared and sprayed an ADD Probe cover, that was kindly donated by Hugh Gordon of Highland Aircraft Museum and a general tidy up of the caravan.

I hope for better weather tomorrow.
