can,t think that we ever did that combo weight imbalance can remember a tank on port inner and a aar(air to air refueling) pod on stbd inner what a pain to service the pod.sure that the tvat used to go port inner but that was only a sim for tv martel and took the place of a dlp(data link pod) for standard martel Think one of the plumbers could tell you exactly what they had where. We did end up with sea eagle some used to carry snakes(sidewinders)and 1000 pounders others ecm pods and day to day running with cbls(seeblees)with 28lb and 4 kg smoke and flash. Then there were lazer designators(pavespike) used to great effect in the 1st gulf war and the paveway bombs to go with it.S**t I,m going to get cabbages in the post.Ask Pete Tulip he will know config,s for sure take care all G cool

Great find Paul! That makes the fitting of the tanks to 894 even more poignant!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn’t this Buccaneer S2D XV869?

I made a start on the missing panels and fuel vents for the slipper tanks today!

The fuel vents and at least one of the missing panels can be seen circled in red in the picture below…

User Image

After straightening all the bent bits out with a hammer, dolly and use of a bench vice it was time to get the paint stripper out!

User Image

User Image

Areas of damage were grinded down ready for a dab of body filler…
User Image

Goo only knows what the yellow primer is but not even the Nitromors would touch it!
User Image

A bit of filler…
User Image

User Image

Some sanding…
User Image

And a test coat of primer on the each one…
User Image

Hopefully tomorrow I can flat them and prime them ready for a top coat off gloss white!

The replacement panels were rough cut from aircraft grade aluminium. These will be offered up to each aperture on the tanks and then finished off locally using a file. Once done, the fixing holes will be drilled and the panels fitted.

Nice work Francis, the primer could be Barium Chromate primer, it's what was used to spray the internal faces of wing skins that formed the sides of fuel tanks, that takes some shifting!! With it being for fuel vents they may have used the same primer. Not very nice stuff hope you had a mask on if you sanded it down.
Regards Paul.

Yes Paul, I was wearing a mask, goggles and gloves!

Fortunately sanding was a bare minimum. It’s to good a foundation for the next coats to go removing it all!

In fact I think the only way to remove it was sanding. When it goes on new it has a very shiny finish and is as hard as rock..Regards Paul.

Whilst waiting for the VC10’s to arrive today I managed to fit one panel that came from an Aero Jumble and one of the ones that I fabricated…

With little hope of finding the nose cone for the port slipper tank the decision was made to just fabricate the whole thing with resin.

First a cone shape was mould was made which was taped on the front of the damaged tank…
User Image

User Image

Resin was injected into the mould, allowed to set which in turn produced the following results…
User Image

User Image

Some grinding, filling and sanding is starting to produce the desired result…
User Image

User Image

The other dents were also filled…
User Image

User Image

And another missing panel was fitted…
User Image

The starboard tank had its nose cone fitted by simply adding a new fixing bracket in place…
User Image

User Image

The fuel vents have now been painted…
User Image

And fitted, but these will come off again when the tanks are sprayed…

Apart from the slipper tank works, most of the day was spent bleeding and checking the brakes which was done successfully. Provisionally 894 will be out on the runway next weekend to start testing the brakes under power!
