Work is slow on XW544 as she is in need a replacement hydraulic line for the wing fold that was mislaid during the move from Shawbury. Once this has been either sourced or fabricated a full assessment both electrically and hydraulically will be carried out before any further works gather pace.

XW544’s scrap port engine is currently giving up some useful parts to help rectify XX894’s troublesome port engine. See photo:

Nothing to report on XW544 at the moment other than she was relocated a few feet further over to the left of XX894 today!
Now the engine works are drawing to a close on 894 we will start to turn our attentions to 544 over the coming months. Watch this space!

544’s shuffle today….

XW544’s progress is as to be expected a little slower than 894’s, however work is currently being carried out on both the canopy mechanism and the re-installation of the wing fold hydraulics.
The one missing wing fold hydraulic line will be fabricated over the next few weeks and once fitted will allow us to apply the ground servicing hydraulic rig to see what does and doesn’t work. If all goes to plan a hydraulic demo on the 27th may be a possibility!

Expect some pretty exciting video footage of 544 in the next few weeks when this event happens!!!!

Thanks to the efforts of Andy and Dave, the wings are now down on XW544 for the first time in years, and surely you have to agree that she looks stunning!
Andy is still working away on the canopy mechanism at the moment, which will hopefully be operational some time soon!

It was a very enjoyable day at Bruntingthorpe yesterday as XW544 had the first of her two scrap engines removed in readiness for the installation of a soon to be refurbished Spey Mk101.
The installation of the replacement Spey will occur in just a few weeks time and although the fuel system needs much attention, the engine will hopefully be started and test run shortly after fitment.

Ready for removal…

Removal complete!

During removal a ‘Reject tag’ was discovered attached to the engine stating that there is a large crack in the burner casing shocked
There’s absolutely no hope in fixing this particular Spey, but it will yield many spare ancillary parts.

Exciting times for all those involved!

Andy, its great to see that after all the time and effort that yourself, your Dad and George, put into getting 544 to Bruntingthorpe, your patience is slowly starting to be rewarded.

Good luck for Saturday.

After Andy, Dave & Malcolm installed the replacement engine in to XW544 a couple of weeks ago, it is now time to start re-fitting some of the ancillary equipment!
Firstly, a refurbished Fuel Flow regulator was installed, followed by the fitting of an LP taco generator to the LP Fuel Governor. Most of the umbilical looms and hoses were also connected up at this time along with any remaining fuel and associated air lines. Phew! Still plenty more to get on with yet though!

Unbelievable!!!

20+ years since she was grounded and XW544’s hydraulic system still works a treat!

The bomb door rotates, the flaps and arrester hook lower and raise, even the airbrakes and wing fold works!
At last, I fully understand the reason why they dubbed it the brick!

I’ll let the pictures and videos speak for the rest of this post.

XW544’s faulty starboard power plant was finally removed yesterday in preparation for another refurbished unit to be installed.
On another really positive note she also had her recently installed port power plant spun over for testing purposes! This was possibly the first time in 20+ plus years that she has done so. Very exciting times lay ahead.

Congratulations to Dave, Andy and Malcolm for achieving all that they have so far with this project.
