Any news on 544? Also I am wondering if this summer will see pairs runs of the buccaneers?

Some of you may have noticed that for a while now, XW544 has been sporting one wing ‘folded’ and the other wing ‘spread’. This was due to the rear lock pin valve seizing during a hydraulic exercise back last year. I am now pleased to say that the offending pin has now been extracted with the aid of 6000psi of independent hydraulic pressure and some gentle persuasion by Dave and Lee.
With the wing now back up out of the way, the faulty valve will be removed, stripped down and overhauled in the coming weeks.

buccaneer01
Thanks for your constant support, its very encouraging!

We are all longing to see a pairs run of Buccaneer’s however, the first run is likely to be with XX894 and XX900, XW544 is still some way off this target yet

All being well and with maximum effort by the people involved, a pairs run should become reality before the end of this year.
We are having a very trying time with XX894 at the moment, just keep your fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong and that we can fix all of the currently outstanding snags in time.

A major milestone was reached with XW544 on Saturday when for the first time in 25 years she lit her port engine. The engine only reached 30% when the tests had to be abandoned due to a faulty turbine gas temperature reading. The gauge was replaced and the engine re-lit, but the same error occurred again proving that the gauges were ok and that the fault lies elsewhere. This minor problem will be rectified during the next couple of weeks hopefully allowing the engine tests to resume once more.

Even by my standards the video your about to see is poor, but at least you get some idea of what took place!

What a shining moment in 554s retirement! Hopefully the problem isn't a big one!

I am led to beileve that one of the biggest problems with 544 is going to the integrity of the fuel system, this was one of the reasons she was withdrawn from service early, as quoted by someone who worked on her in service, "ah yes, 544, she was what we called a hanger queen, dustbins were not enough to catch all the fuel".

Umm, I don't think that is going to be enough as this was all done during her service life and did not fix the problems. I wish the team all the best with her.
