I am led to beileve that one of the biggest problems with 544 is going to the integrity of the fuel system, this was one of the reasons she was withdrawn from service early, as quoted by someone who worked on her in service, "ah yes, 544, she was what we called a hanger queen, dustbins were not enough to catch all the fuel".

We’ve yet to find out what state the fuel tanks are in? The only positives at the moment are the fact that once repaired they will never again have to endure the rigors of low level flight and the twisting forces of a harsh landing!

I think you may find that you can probably get away with doing the same things as you have done with 894 on the Fuel System.

Lets hope so because 894's system works an absolute treat!

Another Spey 101 engine has now been sourced for XW544. This particular Spey has suffered some damage around the rear bypass casing which is now in the process of being repaired. Luckily one of 544’s two spare scrap Spey engines will provide all of the necessary parts to repair the replacement engine. All being well, this new engine will be installed before the end of the year. Of note is the fact that this engine has come with all of the blanking plates and covers (coloured red) still fitted suggesting that it may have been removed/serviced/stored whilst still in service rather than being pulled off the side of a scrap Buccaneer in a yard somewhere!
Also, the wing fold operating system within the cockpit has now been repaired and re-assembled and a cockpit volt meter has been tested and fitted as well.

The new(ish) Spey 101…

One thing has bugged me about 544 for years, and that’s the damaged lower UHF aerial. Today was the day that I decided I could put up with it no longer!

Also, work continues on the new engine.

The next job is to get the good engine rebuilt using the donor parts prior to some testing!

XW544’s top and bottom Rendezvous Lights have now been removed for overhaul and repair. Hopefully these will be refitted in full working order over the coming weeks.

Cant help but think the damaged antenna looks like a broken tooth! In some of the video clips the rendevouz lights appear to flash white. Is the rendevous light only red on the belly?
