Finally XW554’s starboard Spey has been fitted!! Yesterday morning started off with a successful ground run in the stand and then in the afternoon the Spey was transplanted from the stand into the airframe.

The capacious engine bay…

The Spey is finally back where it belongs…

Nacelle re-fitted… Job done!

Now, the eagle eyed among you will perhaps notice that the weather conditions and time of day appear to change half way through the re-fit process. This is not an illusion because when the engine was first fitted in the afternoon we could not get it to pick up on the main fuselage mounting point? To our horror we soon realized that the main fixing was missing from the Spey. If only we had checked first!! So out came the engine again for the part to be fitted (which was robbed off of the unused side of the port engine). In the end we wrapped things up around 10pm but at least we know that in just a few weeks time our hard work will pay off when we get to see 544 roar in to life on both engines for the first time in 27 years!

A quick update from today, a few hours spent in the wet today preparing the starboard side engine mounts for the (hopefully ) imminent installation of the starboard engine.

Was a little bit wet but not to bad.

All engine bay panels/pins removed and greased up, jet pipe rubber seal was put back in.

The eagle eyed among you will see there is a panel or engine blank and a stone halfway down the jet pipe i couldnt reach which will have to be removed, how it got there is anyones guess
User Image

We also have an oil cooler going of to be repaired this week
User Image

starboard blow valve removed also for clean up.

And heres a pic of some of the many bda patches/repairs 544 has along her spine.

cheers Andy
You mention the battle damage repairs on the spine. I,m not sure which aircraft but whilst at Cyprus doing a peace keeping fly through Beruit the buccs were shot at one at least coming back with bullet holes in the spine and tail with a little research might be able to find out if this was the cab .

Matt, my car is fine but my wife's has gone to the scrappy so I've been taking care of school runs and parties etc. Brought her a new one yesterday though so alls back to normal now!

We all worked on 544 on Friday. The engine is now fixed securely and the jet pipe has been connected. All the electrics with the exception of two looms (which are missing) are done, and the hydraulic connections are almost complete too! Lots still to do though before she fires up both engines!

Saturday was spent collecting various items. The size of my car came in useful again with the canopy being 9'3" long

User Image

a brake pack, canopy and a few other bits were collected in a 450mile round trip via Kings Lynn and Felixstowe.

the canopy will be on 544 soon as a temporary measure whilst her existing one is reglazed and then will go to another cockpit section.

keep an eye out for JP spares on you travels then, i'm assuming the brake pack is a spare or is it needed straight away on 544

This one will be serviced and put on the aircraft whilst the others are done, then live as a spare.

I didn't see any jp spares yesterday only lots of Bucc stuff sorry.

Yesterday saw some more small steps forward with the flying control hydraulics proven, everything is to be expected a bit stiff though. It was good to see the tailplane and rudder moving.

hydraulic pump O-rings replaced and some more engine ancillarys replaced/reattached.

Next week should see the wing fold removed/cleaned up before reinstallation. Maybe even early enough in the day to fold the wings down and exercise the general services.

544 is now up on jacks and will remain so for a good while now as her brakes and wheel bearings are next on the list.

did that seal do the trick or am i still on the look out for one at work, as i'm down next week so if your desperate for any other consumables (other than the engine liquid stuff) then give us a bell. It might be worth posting some pics of those missing bits "D" shaped bolts etc that your after to attach the ancillariles plus dimensions, i might be able to find something in the scrap bin
