Yeah it did the trick, seemed to be a perfect fit, should seal but will only really tell when the engines next run.

I'm more than willing to swap my time and limited abilities to help. just tell me when.

I'll be there saturday anyway so i'll come find you

Not much to report from the few weekends after the open day.

both main wheels removed and bearings greased.

General services hydraulics reset and exercised.

Pending jobs are oil cooler refitting and an antidet run asap.

This saturday 26/09 saw the removal of the pilots seat with DT playing crane driver, to lift the cockpit floor for access to the the flying control linkages. Neccesary as the rudder pedals had about 2 " of travel and the joystick was locked in the vertical position, It was that stiff we believed a rigging pin must be in the system locking it in place, The floor panels put up a fight and as usual the drill came out for a few of the screws rusted in.
Even with the seat out the cockpit is a very tight space and Me, dave and julian were bent into some very uncomfortable positions!

A good spray of wd40 and movement of of the visible parts of the linkage revealed that the problem was forward of the cockpit so we had to strip the avionics/washer bottle out of the nose to get at the front linkages which were severly corroded.Took a while to get in there but this had to happen anyway and has helped in the end as we needed to get at the accumalators located there soon.

So as the sun was starting to set over Bruntingthorpe last night we had full motion of the stick and rudder pedals.

Next saturday will see a full function test on the rig and replacement of the seat.

Refit/test of intercom boxes will hopefully be carried out.

A lot of progress has been made in the past few months and the goal of seeing 544 move under her own power by the year end is looking increasingly promising.

On an aside we also found that some one from ASF honnington had left us some graffiti, apparently ben is a zifter...... what ever one of those is.

Always amuses me to find ground crew messages left in the inards of the aircraft.

Despite the dire weather predictions the airfield was dry and reasonably sunny all day yesterday.

Good thing to as this enabled another test and run through of the hydraulics which highlighted a problem with the rudder. The system was checked front to back through the bomb bay and the only visible problem was some corrosion on and around the PFCU situated on the rear bulkhead in the radio bay. There is some exposure to the elements here with the airbrakes open as the airbrake ram exits through the airframe.

A good spray of grease some wishfull thinking added to a 30mins soak and everything performed as it should!! Rudder, rudder trim, tail plane, tail plane trim and tail plane flap all ok!

So the cockpit floor went back in after the throttle linkages were greased and the seat will follow next week.

The starboard wing wiring was finally sorted out yesterday!

The port wing will get the same treatment in shortly!

Also, both engines were dry spooled in preparation for a run in a few weeks time. This was the first time that the starboard engine was spun over since fitting to the fuselage!

Hi Paul,

The red looms are the armament connections to the pylons. Fortunately we do not require them grin

Cheers, Francis

Another quite warm sunny day yesterday saw some a few more small steps taken. Julian bled the brakes and with a little start off from DT and his tug the brakes were tested and stopped the aircraft nicely they will need bleeding again but are pretty good.

544 was also given a bath to remove the resident birds crap. Looks a lot better now. Just needs painting now to bring it back up to its former glory.

We have suffered a little setback with the cdc oil tank. the one we have has a hole in it which has been welded but the weld won't take properly and keeps cracking. Its only a hairline crack but ox-38 is expensive.

So does anyone have one spare they'd be willing to donate ?

we also need a trouser joint for the right engine blow sytem. we have 4 but all for the left engine.

The blow duct isnt essential but it would be nice to have both sides working properly.

If you can help drop me an email at ostrich74@googlemail.com please

Well, we finally run the newly installed Spey fitted to XW544!

Both port and starboard Speys were run in turn for the first time in 27 years with only a small handful of snags to fix.

A few photos...

The port wing wiring was also completed along with the port aileron cables.

All being well 544 will be run on both engines simultaneously in a few weeks time!

Im sure Andy will post additional details?!
