The engine looms are all renewed and some work was done in the top deck electrical panels as it was a good day weather wise. Some idiot when they designed the system decided to mount some of the relays upside down so they, instead of keeping the water out act like resevoirs for water so we changed at least one, also two magnetic relays and three circuit breakers, one of which controls some of the busbar in the cockpit possibly why there's not a lot of life in there (we need a couple of 45 amp type A no 4 CB's as we only have 25 amp at present). Some more pipework was also refitted to the 'new' engine (no chance of lifting anything due to the brunty situation) possible engine lift in the new year. That all for now

An update from Matt…

“Basically we'll need a few more of these items if anyone has any? Considering the state of the ones we've already changed we'll definitely be needing more!
Oh, we also found one of the main magnetic relays had blown it's track apart !!! there was definitely no wiggly amps getting past that one!”

I can do both types of relay - please let me know what quantity you need.

Incidentally - and somewhat off topic - the black rectangular relay is a relic from the war - they were originally used in the FW190 as landing gear relays. Also found in the Me262!

not half but we need to get the top deck bays sorted first as that's where the power is directed to all the main circuits unfortunately it's rather exposed to the elements, but hey ho onwards and upwards, work should continue this weekend depending on other brunty tasks

A quick update from Matt:

"removed this last week to see why the intercom wasn't working
it became immediately apparent on dismantling that the rotary transformer had seized solid
anyone with any spares give us a shout".

An update from Matt,

"Included are two photo's of chris my brother's latest working on vixen parts the first is the continuing restoration and updating of the intercom amp with modern electronic components and the second shows the main contactor on the right which we are trying to fix and also another type of vixen contactor on the left which i believe came from the battery compartment."

I will be down on saturday at brunty to nestle amongst all the vauxhals, hopefully i'm going to pull the new avon's LP fuel filter and Main oil filter and prep them for going back in prior to engine fit, i've also got a contactor to re-fit and some wires i forgot to connect up last time

Dave has continued with his mini project of getting his Mk8 Hyd rig working still desperate to find any servicing notes or manuals for this so we don't blow it up

I've also got permission to lend a couple of 10 tonne tripods temporarily next year to service the brakes, so there's alot going on behind the scenes

roll on new year and better weather

Another typical brunty day but i braved it

we managed to tow the engine into the hanger at brunty today a first for me , to check on the LP fuel filter first question was where it was, after a good half hour it was obvious and fairly easy to take out and check (but not in the aircraft) all back together, 1 more ignitor plug salvaged

We've decided to carry out the oil change and filter check when it's back in the aircraft as access is restricted in the transit frame anyway i went home then to dry out once again thanks to dave walton for the hour or so in the hanger (not the vulcan side)

more stuff retreived from the store today for overhaul 2 x accumulators and finally 1 drop tank eru

Hiya folks, here's a quick update from Matt.

2 Accumulators for overhaul although they are assembled really strangely.
User Image

also a drive shaft to make good before engine fit.
User Image

and the airstart stripped down, this is a trawl for anyone that happens to have any tech info on the air start units before we fit them to the running engine we want to make sure they are stripped down and checked.

Another quick one from Matt.

Got bored at work as it was the last before christmas and sorted the drive shaft, first time i've got a quick release coupling on a sea vixen part to work properly.
User Image

Also copiously applied hammerite to it and one of the accumulators, decided that as the accumulator still moved up and down i'd leave best alone.
